A Look Back at SVTC's 2008 Annual Benefit
The Electronic Waste Global Footprint: from U.S. to India
SVTC’s Annual Fundraising Event in November 2008 was a great success! Held at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San José, the event featured the premiere of Citizens at Risk, SVTC’s recent documentary about the impact of U.S. e-waste on recycling workers in India.
Highlights of the evening included awards for outstanding community activism, including the first-ever Ted Smith Awards. Ted Smith, the founder of SVTC, presented two awards—to Richard Hobbs for championing human, civil, and immigrant rights; and to Leroy A. Smith Jr. for calling attention to the dangers of prison recycling programs.
The 2008 Community Partner Award went to Youth United for Community Action (YUCA) for their work exposing health and environmental violations. Alvaro Alvarez (left) and Miriam Cruz (center) received the award on behalf of YUCA from SVTC Campaign Director, lauren Ornelas (right).
