Bay Area Nanotechnology Maps
In early August of 2008, SVTC launched the Bay Area Nanotechnology Survey. Surveys were sent via mail to 129 local companies and universities based on a list from the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies and the Nanowerk database. The following maps were created using information provided by the companies who responded to the SVTC survey.
The first map ("Bay Area Nanomaterials Users") provides a snapshot of companies and universities in the Bay Area that are "likely users" of nanomaterials based on website research and survey responses. This map shows the presence of nanomaterials usage in the Bay Area.
The second map ("Monitoring of Nanomaterials"), also based on "likely users" of nanomaterials, shows which of these companies have confirmed, by responding to our survey, that they monitor their activities in some way. Only a few companies currently conduct any monitoring of nanomaterials, while the vast majority does not.

Red markers - Company is a possible (but unconfirmed) manufacturer or importer of nanomaterials, per information provided by website research or survey responses.
Teal markers - Company is "very likely" to use nanomaterials based on information provided by website research or survey responses.

Monitoring of Nanomaterials

This map identifies companies and universities in the Bay Area that are "likely users" of nanomaterials and that conduct at least some monitoring of their activities.
Red markers - Company is a "likely user" of nanomaterials, but did not confirm via the SVTC survey that it monitors the use and disposal of nanomaterials.
Blue marker - Company is a user of nanomaterials and responded to survey stating that it monitors the use and disposal of nanomaterials.
